Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

For my first recommendation, I chose this classic, which I read for the first time when I was living in Japan in the early nineties. In addition to the colourful road-trip element of the story, the book provides a fascinating and thought-provoking treatise on the nature of quality (not as dry as that sounds!). I haven't read it in years, but just listing it here has me itching to crack open its spine again. Sounds like a good Christmas gift to myself!

I just saw a review of a new coffee table book, Galen Rowell: A Retrospective and it piqued my interest about this well-known nature photographer, so I had an Internet 'adventure' this morning to learn more...

Galen and his wife, Barbara, were amazing adventurers and lovers of nature who captured astounding images of wild places that most of us will never go to (Macchu Picchu, Tibet, Africa, etc.) as well as the somewhat more local Sierras...reading about their lives and browsing their photos definitely inspired a sense of adventure!
